Though I thoroughly enjoyed your piss take on how bad rap lyrics are, I find the punk songs I grew up with often burn my now adult ears far worse. Have you ever heard the SLF album Now Then…?

Though I thoroughly enjoyed your piss take on how bad rap lyrics are, I find the punk songs I grew up with often burn my now adult ears far worse. Have you ever heard the SLF album Now Then…? It is a ridiculous pile of European clap trap with hippy bullshit like when a man cheats it’s “Fuck em and leave em and score as many as you can” but when a woman cheats it’s “Though she gave her all, she never gave her heart.” Nothing however, comes close to the song “Welcome to the Working Week.” It’s about a guy on welfare who has “chosen to live his life this way” and if you have a problem with that you can fuck off. Can you imagine an American artist proudly singing about his welfare check? I think Ol’ Dirty Bastard may have thrown it out there as a joke but these guys are not kidding around.

Check it out…

“And now and then when I’m in the mood
I might get up at the crack of noon
Then take a wander down to the arcade
Might as well clock up a high score
And hang around with my mates before
I wander back to find my dole’s been paid
Stay outdoors, play football
Or simply play the fool. If it rains go back in
You can always watch Play School

Don’t try to tell me that it ain’t a lot
I’m gonna make the best of what I’ve got
So I’ve got no job ….. welcome to the whole week

I’ve always got my LP’s to play
Or find a friend to get a loan and tape
And any time it’s time to eat again
Before you know, it’s any night and so
You meet the gang and go along the road
Take any chance to have a drink or ten
Share the crack. Blokes with cash
Get a hit of something else
Out all night. Shoot and fight
It makes you feel that you’re yourself

Some of you have got it in for me
I don’t need that or your sympathy
So I’ve got no job ….. Welcome to the whole week

If you don’t mind, I have decided to live my life
Well, it’s always something to do

My girl comes round and all we do is talk
For hours on end, or we don’t talk at all
While we do more … or less … as we please
You keep on that it’s wrong
We haven’t earned lives of ease
But there’s no work to do
And I won’t queue up on my knees

I never said that this was my ideal
But still I’m gonna feel and make it real
So I’ve got no job …… Welcome to the whole week

I never promised you I’d go away
You can’t ignore me cos I’m here to stay
So it’s too bad …. Let me at the whole week”

Punks claim to hate hippies but the stuff they say would make most American socialists blush.
Sincerely,
Sebastien M

Sebastien,
You’re forgetting one thing. SLF were IRISH. Irish people are even stupider than Italians. If you stick to British punk you’ll see their lyrics are always far superior to rap. Even so-called Anarcho punk bands said shit that would make hipppies run home crying. For example…

CONFLICT “An Option”
So why haven’t the government closed our borders
When waging a war against terrorism – are they fools?
-
I’m sick and fucking tired – told what I can and cannot say?
Fucking nigger cunt, punk bastard?
How’s that for starters, eh?
Politically correct? Am I bollocks.

and

CRASS “White Punks on Hope”
Black man’s got his problems and his way to deal with it,
So don’t fool yourself you’re helping with your white liberal shit.
If you care to take a closer look at the way things really stand,
You’d see we’re all just niggers to the rulers of this land.”

Sincerely,
SBTVC

Stiff Little Fingers were bummed skinheads like them so they swung the pendulum into PC town and bummed everybody out. I saw them live in London once and they did a cover of “White Lines.” The Oi boys were not impressed. Nor were the actual fans because it sucked.

    that song was amazing

  3. Mr. Belvedere says:

Crass knew how to write some damn lyrics, they did.

  4. @ Sebastien M

    Shut up.

  5. fizzlebottom says:

Things got so much worse in the early 90′s. If you think this is bad you should see some of the overwrought PC garbage that came out during that time like Moss Icon and Spitboy. I blame Fugazi.

  6. @ fizzlebottom

HAHAHAHA! Spitboy! I haven’t heard of those retarded bitches in ages. I remember at Gilman Street they used to stop and leave mid set because they didn’t like the vibe from the crowd. My stupid ass riot grrl girlfriend fucking loved them.

  7. ourladyiftheflowers says:

stiff little fingers had one good song, besides that they were to punk what 98 degrees were to boy bands, faggots

  8. TT says:

The person in the song Welcome to the Whole Week was not proud of being on the dole or welfare as you put. It was a depiction of how many people ended up without the prospect of a job due to enforced unemployment. I find it hard to fathom how anyone could fail to understand where the premise of the song. SLF are an excellent group and the Now Then album has always been underrated.
