Every once in a while, I stumble upon an artist who hasn’t just nurtured an incredible talent, they’ve been born with one.

Laura Park is one of those people. She has an ability to draw that you just can’t learn. It’s in her DNA. Unfortunately, so is some potentially cancerous stuff she just had removed so she hasn’t been doing comics for a while. I like Judi Rosen’s new foray into embroidery and have recently been getting into the guy who does Bob’s Burgers a lot, as well as his buddy Jonny Negron. I’ll always like Scott Campbell, Meryl Smith, David Choe, Brian Degraw, Wes Lang, and promise to embrace Travis Millard as soon as he stops drawing sausage fingers.

Recently, Gerald Leung blew my socks through the floor the same way Gunsho did the first time I saw his stuff (Gunsho did our logo). BUT HOLY SHIT CAN THIS BITCH EVER DRAW. As far as I’m concerned, she’s in the same league as Dan Clowes and Robert Crumb and Chris Ware and Dave Cooper and Charles Burns and Coop and The Hernandez brothers all those greats. She really has that magic thing you only see once every few years. It’s not hard work. It’s God’s gift. Check this shit out…

The Totally Stoked Chick (which is how I discovered her)

    audrey kawasaki rip.

  2. Kind of a late 70′s Playboy vibe here in the caricatures, but she shows a good bit of sincerity as well. There is a nice level of detail in the hair of her drawings, which indicates she has both patience and discipline as an artist. True, the resurgence of comics in the 90s has presented a continuing dilemma for burgeoning realists. I’m trying to think if there is anyone in New York right now who would show these. Good find Gavin, better tuck away a few originals before she gets famous.

It would be cool if you promoted stuff like this more often, but I assume the problem is finding stuff that’s promotion worthy. Agree that she’s a good find. Will attempt to support her with $.

I just Googled audrey kawasaki, I definitely see similarities but there’s nothing wrong with being influenced by others. Do people think this crosses the line to ripoff?
