Electro-pop band French Horn Rebellion has been picking up some notoriety on the Internets. We were a little disappointed to discover that these boys from the Midwest are pretty fucking wholesome. But their out-of-this-world weirdness (the concept for their new album includes a journey through Brazil, Antarctica and Space; possible suicide; aliens and landings on another planet) and glo-fi jams kind of make up for their bit of squareness.

The duo of real-life brothers Robert and David Perlick-Molinari are joining Neon Indian and Cubic Zirconia in a Valentine’s Day DJ set so Aileen Awesome and I forced them to shotgun beers with us (I totally kicked Robert’s reluctant ass; here’s the shitty video) and then answer some stupid questions.

SBTVC: Let’s get the boring stuff over with first. What’s new with you guys? What’s next with you? Shill us your shit.

FRENCH HORN REBELLION: Right now we’re working in the studio on our debut album — should be coming out sometime this summer, probably in July. In the meantime, we’ll be touring in the UK and France, including a performance at Jean-Charles de Castalbajac’s fashion show in Paris. After that we return to the states for South by Southwest and a tour with Little Boots and Dragonette. Should be super fun!

SBTVC: What’s up with your art? We noticed it revolves a lot around space and nature and the golden ratio. Who does it and what does it mean?

DAVID: Well our art has a lot to do with our music. A lot of the ideas come from childhood, fringe mysticism, and other fun stuff we find on the Internet. The project is a lot about traveling from one place to another — from one state of mind to one completely different. A lot of our art has us in situations that are part of our creative world — the way we uniquely see the universe, or the way we think we should see the universe.

ROBERT: Yup the art is mostly done by me and my sub-par photo-shopping skills. Sacred Geometry is the bomb!

SBTVC: We heard a rumor about a Ben Folds Five coverband in high school. How embarrassing! Care to comment? Were you both in it? Have you guys always played together?

ROBERT: Yeeeah, it was actually just me in that band. I’m not really embarrassed about it though. I’d do it again tomorrow given the opportunity. The way that he voices a lot of his piano chords still influence me to this day! He does this weird rock / jazz hybrid of piano voicings. They are sooo cool!

SBTVC: All of this talk about journey and adventures makes us wonder how much LSD you guys do on the regular?

ROBERT: Well we don’t do too many drugs (and by not too many, I would say just alcohol). A lot of our new stuff is really trippy, though. The reason for this may be because I spent two full weeks up in Cape Cod recording all of the concept tracks on our album by myself. It was a bit like doing drugs, as I was not in contact with a single soul for two full weeks! Just me and my instruments in the woods. I would go take bike trips out into the woods and hope to find mystical creatures.

SBTVC: Sunday’s totally all about smushing and spooning. Give us some sexy secrets?

ROBERT: Uhhh.

SBTVC: No? Have you guys ever had a threesome together? Or at the very least done the same chick?

ROBERT: No, never. We actually get this question from dudes a lot but it’d just be weird.

DAVID: Our older brother’s actually getting married to the girl I went to prom with, but I never did anything with her.

SBTVC: What happens if a girl isn’t into your band?

ROBERT: Well I think that would be nice! I feel like whenever I’ve dated a girl, she feels obliged to come to our shows, which is not true! If a girl didn’t like my band, I’d understand, and she wouldn’t have to come and feel bad about it.

SBTVC: What type of girls are you into? Describe your perfect ten.

ROBERT: Girls that dance! I’m hoping to meet my lover on the dance floor!!

DAVID: Her name should start with a “D.”

SBTVC: Uhh, okay.

  1. Let's says:

What can I say that would be mean? I guess they’re a little stupid. A little stupid! Did you hear that?

I don’t like things to be a little stupid. They wear funny clothes. I prefer the Tijuana Brass, because they all wore suits.

I like to say things that are not very funny, but you must respect my opinion. This is not a veiled barb at anyone. No barb.

I am being paid for this comment but not by the people you’d expect.
