Mr. Show was a sketch comedy show that started in 1995 and ended three years later. If it was a person it would have a been a toddler who spoke maybe a hundred words, was just out of diapers and got killed by HBO before his first day of kindergarten. Most dead children are on our minds for a week or so before CNN switches to the next tragedy but Mr. Show’s influence refuses to abate.

MR. SHOW BANDS

Take the music industry for example, bands that have taken their names from Mr. Show range from the virtually unknown Mathletes (whose debut “The Life and Times of Famous Mortimer” was a tip of the hat to the recurring director played by Patton Oswalt) to indie-chick giants Smoosh (the show’s Oasis parody) to New York dance snobs Professor Murder (named after the go-to rapper who both feuded with ventriloquists and ridiculed Tibetans).

RAP MUSICALS
Bands are only the tip of the iceberg’s pube’s first molecule. Mr. Show skits are responsible for entire musical genres. In the second season co-creators Bob Odenkirk and David Cross introduced a hilarious idea – the rap musical – and before any of us could finish laughing reality introduced us to “Confessions of a Thug: A Gangsta Rap Musical,” “Just Another Story,” and “Rise” starring Play (of Kid ‘n Play) and Salt (of Salt ‘N Pepa).
This is no longer some goofy band with a penchant for inside jokes. This is reality, man. Life imitating Art so exactly, Art’s kind of like, “Well, you realize by making it real you killed my joke, right? I’m basically Michael Douglas in ‘Wall Street’ right now talking on a mobile phone that’s so out of date it looks like a cinderblock.” You know what? We’re going to start keeping score. What’s a funnier sketch comedy show, Mr. Show or Reality?

As far as Mr. Show bands go, there’s also Puscifer, Maynard James Keenan’s new project, whose name is taken from the fake band (of which he was also a member) from the Ronnie Dobbs sketch.

And Titannica showed up on Brian Posehn’s record.
