In the Bay Area there is a tired old analogy that Oakland is to San Francisco as Brooklyn is to Manhattan. That would be accurate if you forgot just how completely boring SF really is.
In the Bay Area there is a tired old analogy that Oakland is to San Francisco as Brooklyn is to Manhattan. That would be accurate if you forgot just how completely boring SF really is. Fucking city full of people trying to live as extras in some romantic comedy. It’s pathetic. Gentrification… blah, blah, blah… Crackheads… yada, yada, yada… Bridges, Fixies and Hipsters on food stamps. Same shit, different coast. Please allow me to shed some light on certain places, arts and people that you may or may not be aware of in the 510.
LOCAL HAUNT: LOCO’S ONLY
The beautiful Mexican-American inhabitants of LOCO’s live rent free. And there’s a room available!
A zesty combo of debt ridden landlords and drug related violence has allowed this party house/venue to thrive as one of West Oakland’s sketchiest place’s to see your favorite band — if your favorite band is either Ninjasonik, Japanther, Vivian Girls or Cerebral Ballzy… three of which are also not currently based in Oakland. Oops.
LOCAL ART: SWAMPY
This art is done by the richest, most sexiest young lady you’ve ever seen: SWAMPY.
LOCAL PERSON: KREAYSHAWN
I haven’t met a straight male or gay female that has not had a massive crush on this Oakland sensation. She directs videos for the likes of LILBTHEBASEDGOD and is quickly garnering attention for her own brand of… surrealist abstract dance rap? I called Kreayshawn and asked her a few boring questions about the town:
SBTVC: What’ve you been up to today?
KREAYSHAWN: I took myself on a date.
How long have you lived in Oakland?
Twelve years. I was born in SF and moved here when I was 10.
What’s the best thing about Oakland?
Ummm… taco trucks. And being able to act as crazy as you want.
Everybody says that. The Taco Truck part. Anyhizzles, do you agree with the analogy that SF and Oakland are similar to Manhattan and Brooklyn?
I don’t know. I’ve never been to New York.
Oh. Well… what’s some good music coming out of Oakland right know?
Ah yeah. HOTTUB, Beme, others that are just throwing in different sounds. Oh, and hyphy is dead. That’s over.
What do you say to the notion that Oakland is a dangerous place to live?
They’re pretty much right. It’s pretty bad. But what’s good is that, unlike other places, I think that here the people are a lot more accepting of outsiders. Like if you live in a neighborhood long enough or pass someone bummy on the street enough that they’ll remember you and be less likeley to fuck with you.
Got anything in the works?
Yeah, at the end of the month or the beginning of November. Techno bass.
Well I guess never made a valid point with all my harping about that Manhattan/Brooklyn, SF/Oakland analogy. Meh.
