All these pure things come foam and spray of the sea
Of Darkness abundant, which shaken mysteriously,
Breaks into dazzle of living, as dolphins that leap from the sea
Of midnight shake it to fire, so the secret of death we see.
—D. H. Lawrence, The Mystic Blue.

I took a walk along the seaside the other day, and I started pondering about man’s relationship to the element from which we emerged millions of years ago. The ocean has always been there for us, beautiful and mysterious. Sometimes deadly, but we can’t stay away from it.

Yet with the coming of the space age, the sea seems to have lost some of its romantic appeal to us humans, even though about 95 percent of it remains unexplored. From the dawn of mankind, we’ve harvested its fruits, now we use it as a toilet. This makes me sad.

But there are some people who still appreciate what the sea has to offer. Let’s take a look at some of them.

A thousand thanks to my buddy Steinar for the lovely pictures.

Keep dreaming about the sea, my friends.
